When is the best time of year to visit Amsterdam? it is certainly not the grey and doom winter! But is it the summer? Would you not expect the summer to be the best time of year to cruise the canals and windmills? After all frigid Holland is not known for its high temperatures so planning your trip in July or August makes sense!
Visit Amsterdam in Spring:
Well, surprise, surprise. Historical weather patterns show that the month of May has actually less rain and more hours of sunshine than the summer months! Needless to say it is not as warm but chances are less you get splashed by a thunder storm! But apart from that there are many other reasons to visit the Dutch capital in Spring rather than Summer. Last but not least simply because hotel prices are cheaper and you may get a canal cruise without having to wait in line for two hours.
Spring is actually THE very best time to visit Holland. The Dutch are all out as they enjoy the first days of sunshine after a gloomy dark Winter. All the flowers like the tulips are blossoming and the trees and leaves look crystal fresh green! The famous open air flower show “Keukenhof” opens its doors and so does the attraction “Madurodam”. Beaches unlock their open air bars and restaurants and in case it gets warm you can still enjoy some fresh air. Remember, Air Conditioners are not easy to find in Amsterdam so you may want to avoid the sticky hot and humid August days.
Spring time also features the national holiday “Kings Day” and many Dutch go out for a long weekend on the multiple free days they enjoy in May. Nothing compared to July and August when the country is completely shut down and folks have escaped for other cities leaving Amsterdam the victim of just foreign tourists. If you want to mingle with the Dutch you need them around and Spring time is the best time of year to do that!
